Bladen County is the fourth largest
county in North Carolina, consisting of 865 square miles. Of the 100
counties in North Carolina, 55 were once a part of Bladen County which
accounts for the name Bladen, The Mother County.
With a community of over 28,000 people, Bladen County offers a large labor force. Bladen Community College is 6 miles away, with Southeastern Community College 20 miles. The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Fayetteville State University, and Methodist College are all within 45 miles from Bladen County, offering the educational programs and labor force required. Only 16 miles from I-95, Bladen is connected by NC 242, 410, 211 and 131. CSX Railroad links Bladen with Piggyback Service in Fayetteville and daily switching service. The Elizabethtown Airport is located 2 miles southeast of Elizabethtown for all industrial flights. With a 5000 foot runway, this airport can accommodate any corporate jet. For all air transportation, the Fayetteville Airport is 45 miles away, home to American, USAir, Pan-Am, and Delta. There are five lakes in the chain known as the Bladen Lakes. Although they share the same general egg-shaped contours and all are thought to have been formed at the same time - through either a prehistoric meteor shower or a glacier run rampant - only one, White Lake, is crystal clear. That distinction and uniqueness has made White Lake, which covers 1200 acres, a popular summer tourist attraction and has given its namesake town a distinct significance. For one thing, it is the only commercial resort area in the region, and its approximately 400 year-round residents have to make room each summer for about 200,000 tourists. Many weekends will find 10,000 to 15,000 visitors at White Lake, and the four separate beaches and campgrounds that surround it.
